An avid athlete and a former US Army officer, he successfully completed both the Airborne and Air Assault programs while on active duty. He is the former District Leader (AL-7) for Americans for Fair Taxation. Dr. Karnie C. Smith Sr. holds degrees in electrical engineering from Alabama A&M University, a Master of Divinity from Vanderbilt Divinity School, and a Doctor of Ministry from United Theological Seminary.
